AEO vs SEO: what actually differs

They share a foundation and diverge at the point where the result is produced. Here is the mechanical difference, and when each matters.

SEO optimises for position in a ranked list of links. AEO optimises for inclusion in a generated answer. SEO asks “does this document deserve to rank for this query?”; AEO asks “can this page be fetched live, is there a liftable statement in it, and is the company a clear enough entity to name?” A page can pass the first test and fail all three of the second.

Where they overlap

Roughly half the work is shared, and that half is the reason AEO is not a rebrand. A model cannot cite a page it cannot crawl, cannot render, or cannot load quickly enough. Clean information architecture, working status codes, server-rendered content and sane internal linking serve both disciplines. If your SEO foundations are broken, AEO starts there.

Where they genuinely diverge

Retrieval is separately permissioned

Allowing Googlebot says nothing about whether an assistant may fetch your page. Those agents are named individually, and a default configuration from a CDN or a security plugin can block them without anybody deciding to. This is the single most common finding in our audits.

Extraction beats comprehensiveness

SEO rewards the thorough page. Extraction rewards the page that answers the question in two sentences directly under a heading that matches how the question was asked. Long-form pages still work, provided the answers inside them are liftable.

Entity clarity replaces keyword targeting

A model needs to resolve who you are before it will attach your name to a claim. That is schema with stable identifiers, consistent naming everywhere you appear, and active disambiguation from similarly named companies or generic terms — a category of work with no real SEO equivalent.

Measurement is statistical, not positional

Rank tracking returns one number. The same question asked three times of the same model returns three different answers. Citation share only means anything across repeated runs on a frozen prompt set — which is why the protocol has to be published and fixed before the first measurement, not chosen afterwards.

Which should you spend on?

If your foundations are broken, fix SEO first — AEO has nothing to stand on without it. If you already rank well and are still absent from AI answers for your category questions, that gap is AEO's and more SEO will not close it. The honest way to find out which applies is to measure, which is what the free check does.

No. Traditional search still drives the majority of discovery for most B2B categories. The argument for AEO is not that search is dead but that a growing, high-converting slice of demand now resolves inside an answer, and nothing in standard SEO addresses it.

Some can. The test is whether they distinguish retrieval agents from training crawlers in a robots.txt review, and whether they measure citation with repeated runs against a fixed prompt set rather than screenshotting one ChatGPT answer.

Published first-party figures consistently show AI referrals converting several times better than organic, on much smaller volume — Ahrefs reported AI search at 0.5% of visitors and 12.1% of sign-ups.
